Donkey Day - a servant's proper perspective.

”Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”

Today we look at the traditional Palm Sunday scene found in Matthew 21:1-8. While the traditional name of this event is Palm Sunday, I prefer to call it Donkey Day. Not only does this invoke the ancient art of alliteration, but it reminds me of my job as a servant of the LORD.

As a minister of the LORD, especially as a praise musician, it can be easy to think that the people are singing your praises. It is a common fallacy to misappropriate one’s success to one’s own skills. (See Proverbs 16:18) However, it is clear in the Word of God that he who serves God must do so by His enablement:

”For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

God has put together a life of good works for each of us to walk in. He wrote the script, we get to act it out. I often find it amusing that writers get little credit for the genius lines in movies. The faces we see are what we acknowledge. Therefore, seeing that God is invisible, one who is attempting to serve Him has even greater difficulty ascribing to Him glory.

Yet this we must do, for it is Jesus who is worthy to open the Scroll. It is Jesus who paid for my sins. It is Jesus who now lives to make intercession on our behalf.

So why do I love Donkey Day? I love Donkey Day because it reminds me that I am simply a Donkey displaying my Master before His people. My walk is cushioned by their cloaks and palms, but their praises belong to Him.

And why do I quote Jesus telling the disciples to go get Him a donkey, because it seems like such an odd thing to request. Why would a king want to ride a donkey? How were the disciples supposed to pay for the donkey? Perhaps I shall speak more in my next posting on this topic, but for now, I ask you, “How are you called to reveal the glory of God through your simple existence?” (Feel free to share your answers with me, I would love to hear them. – Please use comment form below.)
